This is important to me as I'm about to start with a GSP, having trained primarily Brittanies in the past. Another aspect of this book which I found both refreshing and educational, was that the author consulted with various professional trainers - both to provide their perspective of the breed they work with, and to give the reader other opinions.

If you wonder why a dog book needs to have a lawyer look it over, you'll know why after reading this. Candid reports on the serious troubles a dog breed club faced with its dog going downhill fast. Starts with how the dog was created; its highpoints; its intro to the US; then outlines how the trouble started. A great distillation of the purpose and spirit behind those who work for dogs and why. A great primer! Health, stability and function: these basics were all in trouble. But the club found a way out. A desparate measure. ---The one fault with the book is its one-sided nature. But it is quite clear that it is a personal story. My own subsequent investigation showed that the situation and rescue method was perhaps arguable. But that's second-guessing. This book puts you on the frontline of an emergency. You get the feel that if someone else wanted to stake their career and reputation on the quality of a breed, they could have. But you won't find many who will make such a stand. The characters in this book do. Many people quit the club. But it looks like the dogs are far better off. Quite a tale! As good as any potboiler!

The coins I invested in this book were well spent. My only question is simply this : what took me so long to find this book!

" A very honest look at various flushing, pointing, and retrieving breeds. Includes strengths and weaknesses of each breed, ease of training, suitability to certain types of game, etc. Is now somewhat dated and does not reflect emerging interest in a few of the rarer continental gun dogs, which are given only a brief mention in the back of the book. Was also written before the recent explosive growth in popularity of the field-bred English Cocker. Fergus' bias toward flushing dogs shows through a bit, as he neglects to mention the pointing breeds' invaluable use in covering wide open tracts of land (which saves the hunter the task of doing so). Still, these are minor criticisms, and most first-time gun dog would likely be better of with a retriever or spaniel anyway, for reasons Fergus states. This book should be required reading for all first-time buyers of gun dogs, too many of whom end up buying a dog completely unsuited for their hunting purposes and lifestyle---often because of some of "sales copy" they read on a breeder's website or in some other dog book. The more objective approach in this book will not only help hunters avoid such mistakes, it may also help reduce the number of unwanted gun dogs submitted to shelters annually by people who find out too late that such dogs are more than they can handle."
